Error Message: “Software/ri” (or similar) appears when opening program year 2004 or earlier
SYMPTOMS
When opening program year 2004 or earlier the, an error message similar to the following appears:
- ‘Software/ri’
CAUSE
This error may occur if the state module associated with the error message is corrupt or can not be opened. In the case of “Software/ri”, the state module causing the error is Rhode Island.
RESOLUTION
Method 1 - Uninstall and reinstall the affected program:
- Uninstall the program by following the steps in this article: How to uninstall the program.
- Reinstall the program by following the steps in this article: How to install the program.
Method 2 - Delete the state module that is causing the issue:
Note: Deleting a state module will disable the program from creating tax returns for that particular state. You should only follow these steps if you do not intend on creating tax returns for the state being deleted.
- Exit the the program.
- Browse to the ":drive:\xlinkYY\software" (where drive is the drive letter where the program is installed and YY is the year of the program experiencing the issue):
- In the "software folder" delete the file that appears listed on the error message (for example, if the error message reads “Software/ri”, delete the "ri" file).
- After deleting the affected file, open the program.
The program should now open without error.
