How to password protect/encrypt tax return PDFs

This article demonstrates how to encrypt (or password-protect) tax return PDFs in order to safely email tax returns to taxpayers.

To configure the program 1040 to encrypt all tax returns automatically, follow these steps:

  1. From the top menu, select Setup->Printer Setup. The Application Settings window will open.
  2. Click the Print Options tab.
  3. Check the Always encrypt generated PDF check box.


  4. Click OK.
All tax returns printed to PDF will now require a password to open.

To encrypt a single tax return, follow these steps: - (SHOW ME)

  1. Open a completed return that has no errors.
  2. Click Print on the top toolbar.
  3. Select the Encrypt PDF check box, then click the PDF button.



    The PDF Password window will appear.
  4. To change the password from the displayed default, enter the new password. The password is case-sensitive.
  5. Click Ok.
  6. Enter the PDF password and click Ok.
The PDF will open.
