Error Message: “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file” error message when opening the program on a workstation computer

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to start the program on a workstation computer, the following error message appears:
‘Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file’

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Internet Explorer security settings are set to very high.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this error, the Internet Explorer security setting must be reset on the workstation.

To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer (if it is running).
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type "inetcpl.cpl" (without the quotes) in the Open box and press enter. The Internet Options control panel will open.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset.
  6. In the confirmation dialog that opens, click Reset.
  7. When Internet Explorer finishes working, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
The program should now open normally on the workstation.
