Error Message: “Unable to open index 1040zz” when opening the program on a workstation

SYMPTOMS

When opening a tax return on a network workstation, the following error message appears:
‘Unable to open index 1040zz. Retry or cancel.”

CAUSE

This issue occurs in the following two situations:
  • The shared data folder for the program is not share correctly.
  • The shared data folder is set to read only.

RESOLUTION

Method 1: Verify that the shared data folder is shared correctly:

Perform the following steps on the host computer:
  • Microsoft Windows 7:
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Share with->Specific people.
  2. In the File Sharing wizard, type "Everyone" and then click Add.
  3. Under the Permission Level column, select Read/Write.
  4. Click Share.
    1. If prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  5. Click Done to save the change.
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional:
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Sharing and Security.
  2. Click Share this folder.
  3. Click the Permissions button.
  4. In the Groups or user names pane, click Everyone.
  5. In the Permissions for Everyone pane, select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click the Security tab.
  8. Click Add.
  9. In the Enter the object names to select box, type "Everyone".
  10. Click OK.
  11. Select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission.
  12. Click OK to save the changes.
  • Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional using Simple File Sharing
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Sharing and Security.
  2. Select the Share this folder on network check box.
  3. Select the Allow users to change my files check box.
  4. Click OK to save the changes.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000:
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Sharing.
  2. Click Share this folder and then click the Permissions button.
  3. In the Groups or user names pane, click Everyone.
  4. In the Permissions for Everyone pane, select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.
  • Microsoft Windows Vista:
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Share.
  2. In the File Sharing dialog box, type "Everyone".
  3. Click Add.
  4. Under Permission Level, click the arrow next to the permission level for Everyone and then click Co-owner.
  5. Click Share to save the changes.

Method 2: Verify the shared data folder is not set to read-only:

To clear the read-only attribute from the folder and files, follow these steps from the host computer:
  1. Right click the shared data folder (usually C:\XlinkYY where YY is the year of the program to be shared) and select Properties.
  2. Clear the Read-Only check box.
  3. Click Apply to save the change.
  4. Select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files.
  5. Click OK to save the change.
